About 2 Riverside House
Riverside Education is a specialist independent school that offers alternative education to young people with ASD and SEN aged 14 to 19 years of age, particularly those who are house-bound. The school’s motto is ‘Developing potential in all young people.’ The main aim is to develop creativity and promote the use of technology amongst young people with SEN in the school. As a member of NASEN, we are well supported to understand the needs of young people with SEN. We are also supported by The University of Northampton and a local business person.
We have a capacity for up to 40 full time students and 10 part time. The curriculum involves the five main vocational subjects (Art and Design, Photography, Horticulture, Animal Care and Music) supported by the three main Functional skills (English, Maths and ICT). Science and Religious Studies are also taught as examinable subjects.
Our aim is to help young people understand that all Functional skills are linked to
the vocational subjects they study. Thus, Maths, English and ICT are taught in the five main vocational subjects whenever relevant. The embedding of these Functional skills in everyday life brings out the school’s uniqueness. We also make sure that the Fundamental British values are embedded in all subjects and other social activities.
Enrolment Process
Our enrolment process involves initial assessments to ascertain the level of operation of the young person. This is done through standardised assessments from OCR and BKSB. This stage also involves collection of all background information about the young person, previous school results and risk assessments. A meeting with parents/carers and all professionals who work with the young person is held to make sure everyone agrees to support the placement.
Post16 programme
Our post16 programme is designed for young people with ASD only who find it difficult to cope in mainstream colleges. The programme is meant to help them achieve level 2 Functional skills, secure, employment or achieve one vocational course. There is a lot of emphasis on employability skills as well preparation for the world of work. Each year, we offer apprenticeships to three young people with ASD in reception, administration and mentoring.
