Winslow Court

Winslow Court is a residential centre for 24 young adults with severe learning difficulties and challenging behaviour. Our support is designed to maximise peoples ability to: Have a meaningful presence in their community Make their own choices and decisions (even the most important ones) Carry out day to day living tasks Enjoy a social life and take part in fulfilling leisure activities Participate in relationships with their family and others How do we achieve this? Our six monthly assessments and person centred approach ensures that we are always in tune with the wishes, aims and aspirations of the individual.This includes leisure interests, education, employment and housing choices. Our Consultant Psychologist and Consultant Psychiatrist spend time to really understand the person and the individual/environmental influences that may be causing their challenges to occur. From this we develop positive behavioural support plans that address the negative influences, improving the persons quality of life. We know that communication is fundamental, so with the support of our Speech and Language Therapist we enable the use of a range of alternative communication methods. This ensures that everyone has the ability to participate and make their own decisions and choices. Our dedicated Development and Activity Co-ordinators organize a variety of informal leisure activities and accredited development programmes including the Asdan Towards Independence and Personal Progress. Both programmes develop skills needed for successful independent living. Modules are also used as evidence for the skills section of the Duke of Edinburgh Award and the Winslow Award which are also offered. We have excellent relationships with local colleges who provide outreach courses using facilities (pottery studio, horticulture area) at the homes, as well as working with us to support residents wishing to take courses within the wider college community. Personal development, leisure and work opportunities will soon be available in Derbyshire We consciously help people to build and maintain social networks that have meaning for them, to ensure that have a real place in the community. These networks take into consideration individual interests and/or cultural background. We ensure that people receive the very best healthcare and have access to the specialist services they require.
